Why should we care?

In a 2015 study, balloons were ranked as the third deadliest litter in our ocean after derelict fishing gear and plastic bags. Foil balloons (aka Mylar) can spark fires and cause power outages. Latex and foil balloons and their long plastic ribbons will always remain a toxic plastic in our environment, slowly breaking down over time into micro and nano plastics. Most people don’t see the warning labels on foil balloons and latex packages, “Never Release,” and “choking hazard for children.” Balloon Mission is working to prevent intentional balloon releases for memorials and celebrations and encourage alternatives like blowing bubbles or planting a tree. Be an Eco-Hero, learn how to enjoy balloons, and responsibly recycle them!
